Our Intervention
The design for the Region’s new Directional Centre was aimed at minimising the anthropic impact of the work on the existing building as much as possible, respecting its morphology (a lava bank outcropping about 15 metres higher than the main road that runs alongside it, at the circumvallazione di Catania) and indeed enhancing the surrounding rock garden. Imagined for a vertical development that minimises soil consumption, the proposed work envisages an underground part to serve as foyer and auditorium and, in the northern area of the lot, underground parking spaces. The entrance to the building, located on the ground floor, is preceded by a long covered promenade to protect it from the weather. The subsequent floors of the main building are dedicated to the different offices, with the most popular ones located on the lower levels for greater user comfort, up to the rooftop, a green rooftop with a panoramic terrace. The offices are conceived as smart environments characterised by large open spaces and a few stable traditional workstations (present although not predominant), while the service and staircase core is decentralised for greater functionality of the space. Architecturally, the project is characterised by the caesura drawn at the large restaurant area, dematerialised through the use of glass and further softened by the presence of a roof garden.
Technical Pills
The characterising element of the work, the lightening of the visible structure in the dining area, is achieved through the use of glass and exploiting the structural expedient of tie rods for the upper floor, which is thus dematerialised. With a view to saving energy, again with the aim of increasing the sustainability of the work, a perforated sheet metal frame has also been provided which, by filtering the sun’s rays, reduces the temperature range and overheating of the environment.
