The project, which won the call for tenders issued by the Libero Consorzio comunale di Enna for the design and supervision of works for a school building project, was aimed at securing a building dating back to the 1980s, the Liceo Cascino in Piazza Armerina.
Our Intervention
The need not to affect the regular course of the school year led us to contingent the interventions as much as possible and concentrate them through different strategies for the different blocks, each with current conditions of vulnerability and varying needs, such as the Gymnasium, which had been unfit for use for a few years at this point, using the organisation of micro construction sites. Having completed the design phase in just over a month, in compliance with the latest Technical Standards for Construction (NTC), work was started so as not to jeopardise the smooth running of the school year. An organisation by micro-sites was therefore implemented, which, by contingentising the interventions as much as possible, would concentrate them for the different blocks, each with current conditions of vulnerability and varying needs.
Technical Pills
In order to make the building safe, we planned to lighten the structure, for example by eliminating some attic floors that are currently unused, replacing masonry partitions with highly resistant plasterboard elements, removing unnecessary reinforced concrete superstructures, and eliminating glass-concrete elements still present on the façades. This type of intervention is also accompanied by an enlargement of some resistant sections with new reinforcements, starting from the foundations (where we have carried out special geognostic investigations) and then on the beams and pillars, among which we have planned to include the so-called ‘K bracings’, which play a role in dissipating seismic energy, helping us to make the entire structure even more resistant: since these elements are particularly intrusive, we will consider whether to make them particularly visible, transforming them into true characterising architectural elements.
