Emergency, urgency, timeliness, first line… These are usually the terms that refer to the emergency department, where patients in immediate need of care are treated. A fundamental service, therefore, as has been clearly highlighted during this extended period of public health crisis caused by Covid-19.

STANCANELLI RUSSO ASSOCIATI CONTRIBUTES TO THE FIGHT AGAINST COVID-19

To combat this public health crisis, our firm – led by a group of companies and professionals, including the firm Commapartners, engineers Pennisi and Consoli, and geologist Palillo – completed the executive design for the extension of the new Emergency Room, annexed to Building N of the “Sant’ Anna and San Sebastiano” Hospital of Caserta.

The service will enable a new emergency room facility to be created by early 2021, adapting and remodelling existing premises and expanding them to the extent necessary creating a pathway for patients affected by the Covid-19 coronavirus.

A PROJECT DELIVERED IN A FORTNIGHT

Specifically: the hospital’s new emergency department is an annex to the existing building N, which houses an area for red codes and two rooms for yellow codes, with dedicated corridors and paths to ensure the safe passage of patients.

Undertaken in the last months of 2020, the project required a great deal of planning and organisational effort from all participants, especially for reasons of urgency. Team spirit, problem solving, a high level of professionalism and a strong aptitude for collaboration, even at a distance (due to government restrictions imposed to cope with the second wave of the virus): it was with these resources that the project for the new structure was delivered in less than two weeks, meeting the tight deadlines demanded by the client and the pandemic emergency.

WHAT THE NEW EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT IN CASERTA LOOKS LIKE

The work of our Group was strongly conditioned by the tight schedule and the need of the client to start the construction procedure in order to open the new emergency rooms in as little time as possible and not to deprive the citizens of a fundamental health facility. Meeting this demand also meant finding rapid solutions for the construction phase of the new healthcare facility.

Starting with an expansion of the assigned layout, Studio Stancanelli Russo opted for materials that could be quickly assembled and manufactured: the building is in fact entirely made up of steel structures, with drywall partitions (plasterboard and fibre cement, in particular), as well as a ventilated façade.

EXECUTIVE DESIGN BY RTP (temporary grouping of professionals), STUDIO STANCANELLI RUSSO ASSOCIATI MANDATARY

The executive design covered all aspects of construction: structure, envelope, general, mechanical, electrical, medical and sanitary installations, acoustically and thermally insulated partitions, vertical and horizontal. It also had to deal with the issues of incorporating the new extension, and related changes in the original layout, into the structure’s fire planning, modifying and integrating new evacuation routes and fire-fighting equipment.
