Project objectives

The Katane Palace Hotel is an accommodation facility located in the heart of Catania’s old town. The hotel was built in 2001 by renovation and partial demolition and reconstruction of an existing building. In 2013, the hotel received funding through a call for proposals from the Ministry of Economic Development. The project involved the renovation of installations and energy, finishes and equipment. Our engineering office Stancanelli Russo in synergy with the construction company Ernesto Stancanelli were responsible for providing a “turnkey” service through a design and implementation tailored to our client, using only BIM technology up to the implementation of the “As Built” for the maintenance plan.

Description of the building after the first intervention

The hotel consists of a two-storey building above ground and a second building to the south of the first with six storeys above ground. Between the two buildings there is a large communication corridor flanked by a portico courtyard, and below a basement with a garage and conference room. The lower building, with its courtyard and garage, was demolished and rebuilt in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The upper building, on the other hand, is part of the late 1960s construction except for the Sala Archi, a space defined by masonry vaults dating back to the early 20th century. The hotel has a 4-star rating.

The renovation operation

This latest operation aims to achieve two main objectives: the first is of an architectural-functional nature, with the activation of new areas such as the small wellness centre, the aesthetic overhaul of part of the rooms with the replacement of carpeting with parquet flooring and a sophisticated tatami floor, removal of wallpaper and repainting and greater flexibility of the available spaces. The second objective aims to reduce energy consumption: the renovation of the installations, the replacement of lighting fixtures with new ones that allow the use of energy-saving lamps, the replacement of taps with water-saving aerators, the activation of a badge that eliminates unnecessary waste of electricity when guests are absent, the installation of a water softener and the replacement of water supply lines.
