The project, winner of the competition announced for the design of the new judicial offices in Viale Africa in Catania and presented together with Modo Studio, Comma Engineering, Claudio Consoli, Melita Pennisi, Salvatore Palillo and Rosario Rosso, proposes an integrated environment in the urban space, pursuing the objective of integration and comparison with the surrounding reality in a totally sustainable manner and promoting the sharing of public spaces while respecting the safety of citizens.
Our Intervention
The project, created in the BIM environment, sees a close connection between the function and form of the buildings (Civil Court, Court of Appeal, Judicial Police, etc.), but also a profound relationship between the spaces and the landscape, with a large square open to the sea in continuous dialogue with the built space.
The project consists of several bodies: two overlapping volumes, called Block 1 and Block 2, are entirely dedicated to the Civil Court and the Court of Appeal, while the third, Block 3, is intended for the Police Force (Polstato, VV.UU., CC, GDF). The buildings have rigorous architectural forms and are welded together by the rediscovered urban space (the square), which becomes the distinctive feature of the entire intervention.
Technical Pills
Precise choices have been made in terms of sustainability, with the use of renewable energy sources, recovery of resources, use of recycled and recyclable materials with a focus on durability, optimisation of lighting and natural ventilation, with significant energy savings and high comfort. Also fundamental is the use of innovative technological devices such as the friction pendulum to control seismic vulnerability, a key point in a passive earthquake protection system.
