The objectives of the work

Seismic vulnerability survey work was carried out for the Policlinico San Matteo in Pavia to examine the safety of the building, erected in the 1970s, with non-linear structural analyses.
In 2019, Studio Stancanelli Russo Associati was awarded the task of assessing the safety of some of the building’s pavilions, Pediatrics no. 31 and no. 27, known as Forlanini, with the annexed canteen building.

Our Intervention

After an initial phase of historical research, based on documentary research to identify the architectural-structural composition of the halls under examination, the sustainability and seismic vulnerability of the three buildings was verified.
The investigation included an initial structural geometric survey (which allowed the characteristics of the structure and the preservation of the materials) and then the execution of tests on the materials of the structure to determine the mechanical characteristics of the building’s construction materials. The data obtained were then re-processed with different software and digital platforms that took into account the different construction techniques, in order to assess seismic vulnerability. The non-linear structural calculation thus allowed us to determine the tension and deformation state within the structure under examination, simulating its behaviour when subjected to different stress levels.

Technical Pills

Non-linear structural calculations are mainly used for existing buildings to understand the behaviour of a building’s structures when subjected to different levels of stress.
The Stancanelli Group, by continuously collaborating with professionals and university research bodies, is able to offer these types of design services, which, in a country like Italy with a sustained seismic risk, make it possible to determine the actual state of seismic vulnerability and sustainability of buildings, thus raising the population’s level of knowledge and anti-seismic safety.
